SEEDS OF DESTRUCTION
Linda Andrews is the veterinarian in Hobson, a small farming community that's been revitalized by the effort of Macroseed, a cutting edge biotechnology company that employs both her husband, Rex Andrews and her lover, Harold Zimmer. Macroseed chose Hobson to test and develop TX-40, a new, genetically-engineered strain of fast-growing corn that, it hopes, will increase yields and make the company millions. Linda begins to wonder about the safety of TX-40 when Old Man Rivers brings her a dead cat from his field that has horrible mutations, including a giant tumor which sprouts a fifth leg. Her skepticism grows deeper when monstrous, inexplicable tumors begin to appear in people: Mr. Rivers, young Matt Hooper and her mentally-disabled nephew Eddie. While Harold and Rex try to convince her that TX-40 is safe, warning her that her investigation might generate negative publicity that could cost the company millions of dollars and destroy the town's newfound prosperity, Linda persists. With some inside help, she gets the test data from Macroseed, and with Doc Wells begins searching for connections between the new corn and the mutations. But if she discovers the link, can she trust those closest to her to stand by while she blows the whistle?
