QUALITY OF MERCY
During a heated battle in the ongoing intergalactic wars, Major John Skokes (Robert Patrick) is taken prisoner, and thrown into a dank, dark cell.
Defense Pilot Skokes, who is one of Earth's best warriors, is no match for his jailer, a huge, hideous, expressionless alien. Skokes' fellow inmate is a young woman, Bree Tristan (Nicole DeBoer), Cadet Second Class. She tells Skokes that she and her Commander were captured three months ago, and the Commander had been tortured and killed. Bree is severely traumatized by the experience, and the worst is yet to come: their Alien captors are slowly turning her into one of them, by means of skin grafts and gruesome surgical procedures, without the use of anesthetics. When Skokes tries to rip off one of the alien skin grafts, the jailer appears and takes Bree away for another operation.
Despite Bree's pessimism about their situation, Skokes is determined to get out and get back to the fight. He starts searching the cell and actually discovers a way. But it will take time, and Bree doesn't have much time. When she returns, with more painful signs of her transformation, Skokes comforts her and tells her they will escape. Bree is defeated; she believes the war is lost and Earth is not worth returning to. Skokes tenderly restores her hope.
Later, while sawing the bars of the grate, Skokes overhears another prisoner being tortured in a cell, and cannot continue. He drops back into the cell with Bree, who has had yet another operation. He examines her and sees that her transformation into an alien is progressing rapidly. Bree allows Skokes to look at her in spite of her shame, and solicits his affection, the first and probably last she says she will ever receive from a man. As they passionately embrace, the alien jailer enters and drags Bree from the cell once more.
When Skokes finally gets past the ceiling grate, a vicious creature attacks him, and he loses his knife in a drainage hole. All seems lost, but when Bree returns, she uses her new alien limb to recover the knife. Now Skokes is more inspired than ever to escape with Bree and continue his life with her back on Earth. When Skokes goes back to explore the escape route, he hears the aliens come for Bree again, but this time, he cannot tolerate it. He follows her screams to an operating room and tries to rescue her, but the aliens apprehend him and cut off his hand.
Back in the cell, the two realize there is no hope, and agree to end it all together. Skokes assures her he can end h...
