THE CONVERSION Henry Marshall (Frank Whaley) is a greedy man. His desire for wealth has led him to participate in a real estate scam that financially ruins many people and earns him a stretch in prison. He pays dearly for his greed but still does not learn his lesson -- that honesty and caring for his fellow man are more valuable than money. Once out of prison, Henry fantasizes about revenge against his former employers, Evans and Cannon, who are also guilty in the scam but avoid prosecution. Bitter, angry and armed with a .45, Henry sits in a bar slamming down scotch. He contemplates how he would like to show up at the Evans and Cannon office party and blow the partners away. A beautiful and mysterious stranger (Rebecca DeMornay) interrupts his day dream, escorts him to the party and actually forces him to open fire. After Henry unwillingly kills three people, a security guard shoots and seriously wounds him. As Henry escapes, the woman disappears before his very eyes. The beautiful stranger is one of a troupe of aliens who have come to earth to help Henry learn his lesson and have a second chance at life. Running from the police, Henry winds up in a roadside tavern and is befriended by another one of the aliens, Lucas (John Savage). Lucas gains Henry's attention by miraculously healing his bullet wound. As they talk he gives Henry some perspective on the consequences of his actions. Henry finally understands that although he is basically a good man, he needs to appreciate the oneness of humanity and to treat others with care and compassion.Lucas accomplishes his mission, but the price is high. He does more than heal Henry's injury; he takes it into his own body. He does more than solve Henry's problem with the law; Lucas actually assumes Henry's identity, and when the police come to the tavern, it is Lucas who leaves with them. Henry, who now has a new identity -- that of Lucas -- is free to go and live a good life. Henry now has the ability and compassion to help other people in need.
